GETTING TO KNOW ETAWA BREEDING GOATS

Etawa breeds are widely developed by breeders in the Menoreh hills. One tail for superior quality can reach hundreds of millions.

Etawa breeds are easy to breed because of their ability to adapt well. The advantages that are obtained from the Etawa crossbreed are that they are agile and can survive well in Indonesia, so they are also known as local goats.

The Etawa crossbreed goat is the result of a cross between a local Kacang goat and an Etawa goat. The Etawa breed has a characteristic feature, namely the striped body hair due to the mixing of the colors of the Etawa goat's fur and Kacang.

While the body is large like an Etawa goat with a weight that reaches 91 kg for male goats, for females it can reach 63 kg. The shape of the forehead, nose and horns is exactly the same as the Etawa goat

1. Seed Selection

In this case, you should buy seeds from a group or goat breeders who are trusted, and have super quality goat breeders or chicks.

A good Etawa goat to be used as a male parent is one that has a straight back posture, is large, has sturdy legs, is clean from disease or physical disability, and is more than 1.5 years old.

While a good female breeder goat has straight legs, proportional body shape, is docile, has two nipples and feels supple when touched, and the goat is free from disease.

2. Home

In raising goats, try to locate your cage far from residential areas. Do not let you build a cage in a densely populated area. Because it will cause air pollution which is quite stinging. Etawa goat farming also requires adequate air circulation and sunlight.

Cages should be made of strong and inexpensive materials, with adequate ventilation, easy-to-reach food containers, have dirt shelters and get sunlight. Here are the conditions:

  • The cage distance is at least 10 m from the house.
  • Build a stage cage type cage so it doesn't get dirty _+ 0.5m.
  • Place the feed container at the height of the goat's shoulder.
  • Separate male and female goats, unless you want to mate.
  • Get enough sun and shelter from the night breeze.

3. Feeding

Goat feed is divided into two, namely forage feed (in the form of leaves / grass) and additional feed (in the form of concentrate), and there is another addition, namely silage which is fermented feed from grass.

Provide additional nutritious feed by mixing concentrate and rice bran in a ratio of 3:1, easily bran 50%, coconut meal 25%, and peanut bugkil 25%. Feed is given 2 times, in the morning and evening.

For forage is a staple food for example jackfruit leaves, mahogany, grass odot, and others. The forage given has a weight of 10% of the weight of the goat. Do not forget to give water as much as 1.5–2.5 liters per animal per day, with a mixture of iodized salt.

4. Etawa Crossbreed Goat Care

In order to obtain good and quality Etawa crossbreeds with a high selling value. You also have to pay attention to your goats, namely by caring for and maintaining the health of livestock.

A. Feeding

The amount of feeding depends on the type of feed given. Forage feeding is given 2 times a day, morning and afternoon, concentrate and silage feed is given as a distraction, comboran is given every afternoon. This is important because the feed needs are met.

B. Goat Care

To ensure success in livestock business, we also need to take care of goats. Cattle care can be in the form of feeding and drinking, shearing, cutting nails, cleaning the cage, and other care.

C. Bathing Goats

Goats are bathed twice a month. Animals that have never been bathed will be more susceptible to diseases caused by bacteria and fungi.

The purpose of goat care is to prevent diseases that want to lodge in their nails or fur. In addition, clean livestock will look healthier and more attractive, so they have a higher selling price.

5. Etawa Goat Production

Etawa goats are able to give birth two to three times within two years where once a gestation period an average of 1-3 goats are born. When goats enter the breeding season, female etawa goats can be categorized as mature enough after 6 months of age, and ready to be bred when they are 10-12 months old.

Generally, the length of estrus in Etawa is about 1–2 days, with intermittent estrus cycles for 2–3 weeks.

The characteristics of a goat that is entering the mating season can be seen from its behavior, which looks restless, has a bad appetite and drinks, always wags its tail, urinates frequently, and its genital organs become swollen and wet.

If the signs above are seen, then you should immediately

ra mating female goats, either by direct method or by mating injection or artificial insemination (IB).

6. Harvest

Goats that are ready to harvest are when the goats have reached adulthood (poel / toothless), which is about 8-12 months old. Goat harvest is done every year.

Meanwhile, if you want to sell with the maximum weight or to enter a contest, then the age of 1.5 years is the most ideal. The price for adult Etawa goats is IDR 4-6 million per head.

Try the goat harvest per year to coincide with Eid al-Adha so that the selling price of goats becomes higher and more profits are obtained.
